Socio-economic impacts
Businesses
When a cyclone hits land it can cause damage to many things. One of these things is businesses. Businesses are largely affected by cyclones because their crops, workplaces, workers and products can be hurt, damaged and destroyed.
If a business or work place is located in a cyclone prone area then the workers must know what to do if a cyclone hits and where to go. The business must provide an emergency plan and a method of keeping their workers safe during a cyclone whether it be having somewhere safe for them to be during the cyclone or whether it is just an allowance of a day or so off to prepare their homes or evacuate. If the workers are forced to work on the days the cyclone is supposed to hit and there is nowhere they can go during it for safety then the business could be sued for having an unsafe workplace, especially if someone is injured or killed. For small businesses, being sued could really impact their company.
In a cyclone, items such as crops and machinery can be damaged during the cyclone and that can cause a lot of trouble for the business and people buying the products. For example, most of Australia’s banana supplies are located in the Northern Territory which also happens to be a hotspot for cyclones. When cyclone Yasi hit, most banana crops were wiped out. This made the prices of bananas sky rocket which then caused people to stop buying them which eventually led farmers out of business.
Businesses are also at risk of having their workplaces destroyed, making it impossible for anyone to work there which can cause job losses and places to go bankrupt.
Families
Cyclones can really affect families not only physically and economically but mentally too. If a family member is lost then it can really take a toll on people. Counselling is available for people who are struggling with the grief from cyclones and other natural disasters. It is also hard if the main earner in the family dies because it can leave people in trouble financially. But families who are struggling financially after a cyclone or who have lost the main money-earner in their family are eligible to get a government payment to help get their lives back on track. These sorts of payments are only really available in MEDCs, however.
Rebuilding
Rebuilding can be very expensive after cyclones. Damage to things such as hospitals, houses, transportation, sewerage systems, power lines, workplaces and schools can be very costly and can take a lot of time to fix. If you were in a cyclone and your house was damaged it is possible that you would receive a certain amount of money from the government or organisations to rebuild. However, a lot of people can be homeless for a long time while they are waiting for their houses to rebuild but thankfully there are government run programmes that house the homeless for a while until their house is rebuilt. Renting a house away from the disaster is also another option but a lot of people will be looking for houses to rent so the rents will be much more expensive and harder to find than usual.
